St Helen ~ Model of Femininity

St Helen ~ Model of Femininity

Though she was so advanced in years before she knew Christ, her fervour and zeal were such as to make her retrieve the time lost in ignorance

If you held a cat by it’s tail and swung it, you would hit a person writing or commenting on ‘the boy problem’. Online influencers (mostly male, on male dominated platforms) bemoaning the loss of true masculinity. Many books have been written about disaffected and disillusioned young men stuck in their bedrooms watching porn and paying video games. Boys attainment is lower than girls across the west, Catholic men’s groups have emerged. Smoking jackets, cigars and beards act as an ‘up yours’ to a culture that has tried to emasculate and feminise boys. So desperate are men for role models that Andrew Tate has gained traction. Catholic Men are taking cold showers and showing that you don’t have to be Muslim to live a disciplined life of sacrifice and virtue. Catholic Mens app Exodus 90 offers much needed support

Understandably men are angry. Angry about what has been lost, about what feminism has done to them, about the destruction of hierarchy, about how pusillanimous the clergy have become, the wimpy Bishops, the girl altar servers, the doddery old eucharistic monsters, priests holidaying with their boyfriends, and endless pressure to ordain women. It’s all so gay. Is it any wonder that you can’t swing a cat for men’s movements? Reading about the crusading Knights makes you wonder what has happened to men today? Sadiq Khan has just been made a Knight!

I’m a mother of sons, I do get it.

But growing up in 2025 isn’t a walk in the park for young girls either. I am always surprised by the number of parents who have bought into the push for girls in academia, who champion women’s football, rugby and cricket, who love the movies portraying a badass woman and who go to great lengths to prepare their girls for university, but have zero interest in preparing them for marriage and motherhood.

A young woman today would be forgiven for thinking that her identity (if she has one at all) is bound up in proving that she is just as capable as a man.

This is not about saying that women can’t kick a ball, go to university, perform brain surgery and run multi-billion dollar companies - clearly they can - but celebrating, championing and encouraging all that is part of a wider problem, and it’s a problem that is leaving women looking for men to have babies with in their late 30’s, finding that they can’t and freezing their eggs to (if necessary) raise the baby alone (often after they’ve killed a few along the way when it was inconvenient to be pregnant).
