The Becciu Trial Collapse
A failed prosecution, a damaged reform agenda and hard questions about how Pope Francis governed.
The collapse of the Vatican’s prosecution in the Becciu case is not a minor embarrassment that can be brushed aside. A court of the Holy See has now determined that the original proceedings were compromised by procedural failures of a serious kind, including the withholding of evidence and reliance on papal decrees that were not properly disclosed to the defence. The consequence is stark. The trial must begin again.
This represents a significant failure in the administration of justice. It is also a direct blow to the credibility of the Vatican’s stated commitment to transparency and reform. For a case that had been presented as evidence of a new seriousness in confronting financial misconduct, the reversal is deeply damaging.
